President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday requested permission from the National Assembly to borrow $1 billion to help equip the armed forces in its fight against the Islamist-insurgent group Boko Haram.
Jonathan, in a letter dated July 15 and read out today in Abuja, by Senate President David Mark, said the $1 billion may be sourced from other governments.
“You are no doubt cognizant of the ongoing serious security challenges, which the nation is facing as typified by the Boko Haram terrorists threat. This is an issue that we have discussed at various times.
“I would like to bring to your attention the urgent need to upgrade the equipment, training and logistics of our Armed Forces and security services to enable them be more forceful to confront this serious threat.
“For this reason, I seek the concurrence of the National Assembly for external borrowing of not more than $1 billion, including government to government arrangements for this upgrade.”
Though $6 billion was allocated to defense and security this year’s budget, Federal Government is struggling to curtail a five-year-old insurgency by Boko Haram militants.

Look at this people Ooooh…!!! These politicians are criminals.
If $1 billion is truly needed …you should all take pay cuts from your fat salaries. …by doing so you’ll be demonstrating that you are serious and dedicated. …$1 billion will be raised in minutes. After all you are very idle …good for nothing and do nothing politicians.
This is insane ..it is an opportunity to loot as always at the expense of all. Awon Ole dede....

If the little Malala could donate $200,000 from her foundation ……what about Nigerian billionaires and millionaires?
Each Nigerian billionaire and millionaire should double or triple that amount given the fact most of them ......if not all them made their fortune fraudulently at the expense of poor Nigerians.
If this is a national wedding or birthday they’ll be donating cars, villas and expensive gifts. They have to give back some of what they looted.
Shame on the so called Nigerian Billionaires & Millionaires…..….

The meeting was a staged event organized by Levick, the Washington-based PR firm according to SaharaReporters.
Phillip Elwood, the Vice President of the Levick firm, told a SaharaReporters correspondent hours after the cancelled event that the reasoning for the Jonathan bailout was that “they are facing a crisis on the ground.” Elwood offered no further information, and told the correspondent to call back later for more information.
SaharaReporters did call back, but Elwood’s phone immediately forwarded to voice mail. At press time, there was no mention of the cancelled event on the company’s web site.
******* This is the same PR firm hired by the president a week or two ago…Very funny… $1 million plus or whatever the amount is down the drain. So the president and the government could not find a qualified Nigerian PR firm or any Nigerian PR executives to arrange this type of meeting?
Even NaijaPals’ administrators headed by Nametalkam will do a better job. This is a Nigerian problem to be solved by Nigerians and not by the Americans.
