The Abia State Police Command has arrested seven pregnant young women for returning to a suspected baby factory, where they had earlier been rescued.

It was gathered that the women were rescued by the operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Abia State Command.

Parading the women and other suspects on Tuesday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Geoffrey Ogbonna, said the rescued women were arrested at Osisioma junction in Aba.

He said, “In the course of our investigation, we found out that the women had earlier been rescued by the NSCDC from a baby factory in Umunkpeyi, Isislangwa South.

“We found out that the NSCDC later hired a commercial bus to convey them back to their hometown in Imo State.

“However, as soon as the driver dropped them off at Douglass Road in Owerri, the women chattered another bus to take them back to the baby factory.”

The police also paraded three female suspects; Blessing Oluchukwu, Promise Onyezu, and Nkechi Kalu; who were arrested for allegedly trying to sell the unborn child of one of them ─ Onyezu ─ said to be six months pregnant.

According to police, one of the suspects, Kalu, had earlier collected an advance of ₦50,000 from Oluchukwu, who was to buy the baby .

Also, one Joseph Essien, a native of Ifetai in Calabar, Cross River State, was nabbed for allegedly stealing a three-year-old child, Dorcas Usen.

Ogbonna said Essien was arrested with the victim at Aba while negotiating with a buyer now at large.

He said, “The suspect confessed that he stole the victim from Calabar where the mother had kept her in the custody of her siblings.”

Paraded also were three suspected child traffickers ─ Chidimma Ukpai, Felicia Ahukanna and Peace Ogbonna.

The PPRO said the suspects, all from Alaukwu community in Isiala Ngwa South, were found in possession of three babies, including a set of twins, allegedly stolen at gun point by their accomplices, one Lucky Ohakwe, and another still at large. According to the police, the twins had been re- united with their mother.

But Ahukanna denied any involvement in the crime, saying she was in her home when she suddenly saw a man with a bag which was later discovered to be containing the twins.

Also, Essien confessed to stealing the three-year-old child, saying he was promised ₦200,000 by the buyer.

The police spokesman said the suspects would be charged to court after investigations had been concluded
