The Federal Government is contemplating closing down ten of the country’s foreign missions out of the 102 existing ones, the Chairman of Nigeria’s Presidential Advisory Committee on Foreign Affairs, Chief Emeka Anyaoku has said.

Speaking on the state-owned Voice of Nigeria (VON) Global Guest programme in Lagos, Anyaoku said the decision to shut down the missions was contained in the committee’s report already presented to the government.

Anyaoku,a former Commonwealth Secretary-General, said the decision was meant to reduce cost but did not mention the affected countries.

Media reports quoted him as saying that based on the report of the team which reviewed the various missions, President (Umaru Yar’Adua) has approved the closure of the missions in different parts of the world.
