The 25 -year old Mr. Odunsi, is being drilled by officers of the homicide department Panti, Yaba, for allegedly killing his 20 year-old roommate, Tunde Hassan.
The suspect and the victim, though not related in any way, have been living together in the same apartment on Ikosi road Ketu, Lagos since they were children.
However, on November 23, the brotherly love turned sour over a misunderstanding that led to the death of the deceased.
The story
“I am a factory worker at Tower Aluminium Company and I work at the production unit. On that fateful Monday, November 23, I came back home very tired and I went straight to bed. I woke up around 10.00pm and I was very hungry. I decided to soak garri in water because the hunger was too much. After soaking the garri, I went outside to look for suya to buy so that I can eat with the garri.” Mr. Odunsi said.
Before leaving the house, he said, he called his girlfriend to stay outside so that he would not be locked out. “I then went to buy the suya, but when I came back, the door was locked. I called out to my girlfriend to come and open the door but there was no response.
“I then called out to my friend, Tunde, but he too did not reply. I heard him telling my girlfriend not to open the door for me that maybe it is a thief, but my girlfriend said that she can recognise my voice and she came to open the door for me. When I got inside the house, I scolded him that even if he did not see me, he should be able to recognise my voice but he started murmuring and said that he was not going to respect me anymore.”
Mr. Odunsi said the argument snowballed into a fierce fight which resulted in Mr. Hassan’s death.
The death
“As he was talking, I told him that he should respect me but he kept saying things to hurt me. I became very angry and we started to fight. Our noise even woke up the other neighbours and they came to separate us, but Tunde (would) not be calmed; our neighbours even tried to get him to sleep in one of the neighbour’s room but he refused.
“He became very furious as if he had a grudge against me before. He rushed to pick a rod from the ground to hit me but I dodged him, I grabbed a stick that was being used for the renovation of our room and that was how I hit him on the head.” He said blood started gushing out of his roommate’s head.
“I quickly rushed him to the hospital. I took him to different hospitals, but he died shortly after,” Mr. Odunsi said.
“I really feel bad about Tunde’s death. He was my brother and he was even the one that made all the furniture in my room and bedroom. If someone else has killed him, I would have felt very bad, but now that I am the one responsible for his death, I feel worse. God knows that I did not intend to kill him. If I had known, I would not have gone out to buy that suya. It was the work of the devil.”
The Lagos state police spokes person, Frank Mba, said “Officers from the state criminal investigation department Panti are still investigating the case and the suspect will be charged to court as soon as the investigation is completed.”
