There is palpable tension at the headquarters of the Nigerian Tourism Development Commission, NTDC, over an alleged recruitment of about 50 aides by the corporation’s Director-General, Mrs. Sally Mbanefo, The Punch reports.
As a result, the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees, an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress, has vowed to check the trend which is already before the Department of State Services, DSS.
According to the workers, some of the aides recruited include drivers, special assistants, confidential secretaries, who were placed on grade levels 13 and 17 against the civil service rules. Among the beneficiaries of the appointments include a Director of Finance placed on Grade Level 17; a Deputy Director of Finance, Grade Level 16; Chief Store Officer placed on Grade Level 14; a driver placed on Level 14; one recently employed staff, placed on Level 13; and a Special Assistant placed on Grade Level 16.
The workers also alleged that one of the special assistants had been moved to Lagos so as to place him into the civil service career.
According to the report, a DG is only entitled to a PA within the system but not from outside. Also a female member of staff, who was allegedly employed as a consultant but was directed by the NTDC board to be disengaged, is still in the service of the agency.
The workers, according to the report, are also angry over the following: One Assistant Director who was employed and placed on Grade Level 15 had resigned, another PA was placed on level 15 and posted to Lagos; a Chief Protocol Officer, who possessed a National Diploma in Security Management was placed on Grade Level 14; another female was employed as an Assistant Chief Confidential Secretary and was placed on GL 13; one other is on GL 9; a Deputy Director (Human Resources) is on GL16; also, a Deputy Director (Finance) is on GL 16, while a member of staff with HND (Banking and Finance) is on GL14. The chairman of the workers’s union, Mr. Samuel Opunu, confirmed the recruitments and their regularisation into the civil service.
He said: “The allegation is true, the number of people she has recruited so far is about 50; but the figure has dropped following our protests; the worst is that of drivers, accountants, senior and junior accountants, PAs and SAs who she placed on very high levels.
“We have asked them to review the illegal recruitments. But she has not done anything about it yet. The matter got to the DSS and the DSS told her to review the exercise. We gave her a time frame within which she should act, the time has elapsed and we intend to meet, report back to the DSS and discuss the next line of action.”
However, the spokesperson for the NTDC, Ms. Grace Ukah, said the allegation of illegal recruitments were incorrect. She said: “When did the illegal recruitments they are talking about take place? 50 recruitments? No, it is not true. The allegation is very incorrect; it is better you come to the office for everything to be clarified; there is no recruitment going on in the NTDC.
“I don’t want to be quoted out of context, the administration department keeps records of recruitments and the recruitment files are not with me. For anything you want to clarify, it is better you come to the office and everything will be addressed.”

Here is someone inviting you over to confirm facts. However, as a result of "lazy journalism" or just out of a need to sensationalize your headlines so the accused person looks guilty, you prefer to just quote the invitation for us to read.
It's not about sitting in an office and making phone calls and then writing a story once you're done.
