There’s just something about living outside of Nigeria that makes some of us aggressively patriotic. We find ourselves saying things like ‘Not all Nigerians are 419’ and ‘There’s corruption in every country!’ and ‘Well it’s because us Nigerian’s are sociable people, we like to have a good time but never shy from speaking our minds, what’s wrong with that?’  I’m often singing praises of my country.

I've heard numerous haters complain about how Nigerian’s are greedy, pompous, arrogant and obnoxious. They even grumble about our population – ‘You guys are everywhere!’ (yes, yes we’re well traveled). But, of course, they always add a ‘but you’re different’ at the end, with an irritable tone that makes it seem like I require their approval. In fact, they love to remind me how ‘not so Nigerian I am’ (as if the term ‘Nigerian’ is too bright a red and I was a more subtle – more fitting – fuchsia ) but are always quick to reprimand me when I talk too loud or speak my mind too freely.

What’s more disheartening is that we Nigerians are our own greatest criticizers. We have been dissatisfied with the past and equally unappeased with the present and lack enthusiasm for the future. Even more cynical are those who live in Nigeria itself. I can’t say I blame them because as I’m studying in the UK I don’t have to deal with constant strikes or power failures, and more.

It is true that Nigerians have much to be discontented with – unproductive leaders, unstable educational system, power cuts, political unrest, terrorist invasions and the likes but we do not have to resort to cynicism and bad-mouthing (all the time) because in doing so we create a negative image of ourselves. What we need is a heightened sense of nationalism and a more enthusiastic attitude when talking about our country, especially to outsiders.

Oh and for those outsiders slandering Nigeria and its people, first take a step back and asses the progress of your own country before you judge... that’s all I've got to say (well for now...)

PS. I actually take offense to the whole ‘you’re not so Nigerian’ thing. It’s not a compliment and I’m not impressed -_-

Thoughts?
