Four Nigerians hit Gov’s Cup second round

The game of defeats which swept through Nigerian tennis on Monday receded yesterday as three hoe talents made amends for their counterparts failure by qualifying for the second of the International Tennis Federation-sanctioned Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.
First to book his place in the second round, which holds today, was Sylvester Emmanuel had to raise his game to the highest level to defeat a stubborn  Russian Alexei Filenkov in two sets, 7-6, 7-5.
Emmanuel will now play tournament’s eight seed Fabien Reboul of France for a place in the quarterfinal. It is a match that most Nigerians will be watching with rapt attention as they hope to see  one of their own reach the semifinal, the first of its kind in this year’s Futures.
Also through to the second round is home boy, Joseph Imeh, who  defeated American Anderson Reed in three sets 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 , to set up a meeting with third seed fro Zimbabwe, Takanyi Garanganga.
Joining Imeh and Emmanuel in the second round is Umaru Balami, who conquered  Ghana’s Pascal Ziyab Alome in two sets,  6-3, 7-5
The journey continues for Moses Michael, who defeated Albert Bikom in their first round match and is now set for a tough tussle with men’s singles  top seed Aldin Setkic from Bosnia.
