AUTHORITIES of the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, have expressed shock over the death of five people, including three of its newly admitted students, in an auto crash on its campus on Tuesday, after matriculation.
The accident reportedly claimed the lives of all the occupants of the vehicle said to be students. Three of them, who were newly admitted students of the university, were said to have just concluded their matriculation ceremony about two hours before the incident.
One of the other two was said to be a student of the Ladoke Akintola University of Techno-logy, Ogbomoso, Oyo State. The five students, who were all males, were described as friends.
The accident occurred when they were close to the bridge along the main road that links the university buildings and its central entrance.
It was learnt that the driver of the vehicle, unaware of a bump ahead of the car, applied brake suddenly on approaching it, causing the vehicle to somersault several times.
Some of the victims were later identified by eyewitnesses as students of the Department of Economics of the institution.
According to the university authorities, three of the five students died instantly, while the other two later died.
It was learnt that the incident marred the joy that greeted the successful completion of the matriculation ceremony just before the fatal accident occurred.
Acting Deputy Director of Information of the university, Mahfouz Adedimeji, said that the authorities of the institution were devastated by the news of the death of the students. :'(
