Fifth-placed Manchester United have closed to within one point of fourth-placed neighbours Manchester City with both clubs having six games remaining.
But if United lose at the Etihad Staidum on Thursday midfielder Herrera concedes that with away games at title-chasing Tottenham and FA Cup finalists Arsenal still to come, it will be very difficult to qualify for the Champions League via a top-four finish and leave them relying on winning the Europa League.
“It is going to be the game of the season,” said Herrera. “We are one point behind them. If we win, we have the chance to finish in the top four. If they win it is going to be very difficult.
“Make or break? Probably. Both teams are in a good moment so if one of us wins the game we are not going to make mistakes after that or lose a lot of our remaining fixtures.
“It is going to be key. It is going to be a massive game. We are in a very good moment, a very good run. We respect them but we are doing a lot of good things and we have to show it on Thursday.”
