2017 will go down as the year several celebrity marriages broke down irretrievably in the full glare of the public. While some were more private than others, a few these entertainers unabashedly cut their significant other loose.
Mercy Aigbe and Lanre Gentry
The seven-year marriage between the actress and hotelier husband was initially downplayed by both parties, only for Aigbe to release photos of her sporting a black eye- allegedly inflicted on her by her husband. Soon after she filed a complaint with the police that saw the 50-year-old Gentry cool his heels at Area F Police station for two weeks. She accused him of constantly battering her as well having extramarital affairs. Mr. Gentry on his part denied all the accusations and told the public that his wife had a mental problem.
The case is however still in court as NET findings reveal that Mr Gentry is making frantic efforts to settle out of court.
Ubi Franklin and Lilian Esoro
Around Christmas of 2016, eagle-eyed fans noticed that MMMG boss Ubi Franklin and his actress wife Lilian Esoro practically ignored each other on social media, contrary to their usual custom of being public with their marriage. Reports at the time revealed that the marriage ended shortly after their son was born and Lilian moved out of their house back to her parents. Sure enough, her marital name disappeared from her social media handles as did the photos of her husband. Both parties refused to comment on their marriage breakdown but the also refused to confirm or deny rumours of infidelity by the wife and domestic abuse by the husband.
Tonto Dikeh and Oladunni Churchill
All was going well between Tonto Dikeh and Oladunni Churchill until when in January 2017, her marriage to Mr Churchill crashed. The actress would eventually come out to talk about her turbulent marriage, disappointments, suffering from physical abuse at the hands of her husband and his family members and even released photos to back her claims.Her husband however countered her claims, disclosing that he never abused the actress but was a victim of a woman who was under the influence of drugs.The duo has continued to slander each other by exchanging bants and revealing shady details of themselves on social media, becoming about the messiest breakup that Nigerians have witnessed in quite a while.
Muma Gee and Prince Ekeh
The couple who were married for six years finally had their volatile marriage had dissolved in 2017. Muma Gee while revealing the details that led to her divorce, said that she suffered series of domestic violence from her estranged husband. She also disclosed that he proposed to four different women while they were still married. But Prince Eke countered her claims stating that Muma Gee abandoned him with their four children and ran off with another man.
Damilola Adegbite and Chris Attoh
This perhaps caught fans by surprise the most as the couple seemed like they got it together. A whirlwind relationship led to a public proposal. But no sooner than the couple had their son, there were unconfirmed reports of trouble in Paradise. Damilola largely withdrew from the public while Chris dodged questions about his marriage- that is, until an interview with BellaNaija where he casually dropped that he and Damilola were no lober together.
