At the mouth of a river a woman gazed in
And saw her reflection all withered and thin
She jumped back in surprise at the person she saw;
A woman she couldn’t recognise anymore
She felt pity for the woman who stared back
Each line on her face was like an endless crack
The still river shimmered as a tear dropped in
As she realised her beauty was no longer genuine
“What have I turned into during my time?
Is it because I am no longer in my prime?”
She spoke out loud the questions of her heart
And an old voice replied which caused her to start
She looked up from her reflection and saw a tree
It too was withered to some degree
It said “beauty is not something that you can see
It is something that comes from inside of thee”
“Your outward appearance may not be the same
But let that not ever bring you to shame,
It is what is on ones heart that should matter
Even though your looks may not be one to flatter”
“If the world does not like what they see
Don’t take it as a form of mockery
For they haven’t got the heart to see what is true;
That special beauty that is inside of you”
“Accept who you are for acceptance won’t care
Whether the world leaves you living in despair
And if you accept you are who you are
No matter where in life, you’ll go very far”
“You may not be what you were back then
But don’t let that ever lead to self condemn
You’re beautiful, you know, inside and out
So get rid of any worry or any doubt”
So at the mouth of the river the woman gazed in
And saw her reflection all withered and thin
But she smiled contented at the person she saw
The same person she had known before
I wrote this poem to make it clear that the worlds form of beauty wasn't true beauty but the way you saw yourself and acceptance was the truest beauty of all.
