Akwa Ibom varsity sacks eight lecturers over alleged segxwal harassment, extortion

The Akwa Ibom State University on Tuesday said it terminated the appointments of eight lecturers over alleged involvement in segxwal harassment and extortion since 2015 to date.

 
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Eno Ibanga, said this while briefing newsmen as part of the activities marking the fourth and fifth combined convocation which held at the institution’s main campus in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
However, he said that some of the cases were in still court, adding that 10 students involved in cultism were also apprehended by the management of the institution.
He alleged that the affected students who were caught at the junction of the main campus with a mini coffin, red clothe and axes were on their way to an initiation ceremony.

The professor who noted that all the cases were thoroughly investigated before disciplinary actions were applied said the university is doing its best to instil sanity among lecturers and students.

 
He said, “The appointments of the eight lecturers have been terminated by the university (for reasons) bordering on segxwal harassment and extortion.
“As we speak, a notorious one is on the ground and the person will not go scout free.
“Some of the cases are still in court. I swore to run an institution that can stand the test of time. We are doing the best to bring sanity to the institution,”.
He said a total of 2000 graduates would be awarded degrees and prizes during the convocation ceremony which will hold on Friday at the institution’s main campus.
The number according to him is made up of 920 for the 2016/2017 graduating year and 1080 for the 2017/2018 graduating year.
Ibanga said also the institution would award a total of 41 first-class honour degrees to deserving students.

The number he said is made up of 15 from the 2016/2017 section and 26 from the 2017/2018 academic year.
