Nigerians Dig Out Story of how Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma killed General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi and Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi: .
Dressed in borrowed battle dress and boots, Danjuma took well armed men in two Land Rovers with recoilless riffles capable of blowing buildings apart and proceeded to Government House, Ibadan. There, he took over the command of the men, mostly northerners who jubilated when the mission was disclosed to them. .
Then came a problem how to arrest the Commander In Chief, when he ordered the men to proceed into the house for the arrest, some of the soldiers resisted, insisting that the only way to go about the job was to blow up the house. .
"The crocodile, the crocodile," many of them shouted excitedly, telling him that Aguiyi Ironsi would escape through the powers of the effigy of the crocodile that was an abiding companion of the Commander In Chief.

It took all his persuasive powers to assure the men that the crocodile was harmless. .
He arrested Ironsi and Fajuyi in a small family lounge where they were. He took the crocodile and tore it open. There was nothing inside it, just mere stuffings.
Aguiyi, one of Ironsi's Igbo names, means crocodile, and he may have been carrying the effigy to all places he went merely as a symbol of his name.
What happened after the arrest is now history".
