The acclaimed Nigerian literary icon Chinua Achebe in his book The Trouble with Nigeria was of the opinion that Nigeria’s problem is a problem of leadership. Many agree with him. I do as well. But I dare to add, that the problem is not solely that of ‘leadership’. The problem is a range of factors each of which has its roots in our individual lives and in the collective life of the society, but are made manifest by its public character, in leadership. I am no mathematician yet I will attempt to explain these factors, using words, but adopting the concise form of a mathematical equation, as the title forewarned. The caveat though is that my values are fixed – the words I employ though open to many meanings will mean what I intend for them to mean here. I therefore set out the following 3-level simple equation which seeks to find ‘X’, where ‘X’ is ‘a functional Nigeria’:

Ideas (Politics + Diversity) – Power (Leadership – Service)

= Ideas (Representative headship) – Power (Selfish Interests)

= Strategic Governance – Rogues = X, where X is a functional Nigeria.

Level 1: Ideas (Politics + Diversity) – Power (Leadership – Service) = X

In this first step as in subsequent ones, the value of the words in brackets has to be first determined. For our purposes, politics refers to the art of influencing people towards a purpose, while diversity relates to the occurrence of persons with different backgrounds and interests. The sum of both values is here determined as a representative headship – the process of representational leadership whereby a group determines that a person or group of persons should be entrusted with the task of working for the collective good. I have deliberately not used the term, ‘democracy’; it has come to mean everything but what it truly is; besides, representative headship although a mouthful, is more suited to the indigenous political organizations of the various traditional leadership systems across the ethnic groups in the country.

GOOD, GOOD MY BRODA BUT YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN YOU'RE IN NIGERIA. YOUR POLITICAL CALCULUS SHOULD HAVE CONSIDERED A "CONSTANT" OR ECONOMIC TERM OF "ALL THINGS BEING EQUAL". BUT WILL ALL THINGS AGREE TO BE EQUAL? IS ZONING EQUAL? IS IT QUALITY (JONATHAN) OR QUANTITY (NORTH)?

PLEASE EXPAND YOUR FINE ANALYSIS TO INCLUDE THE NIGERIAN CONSTANT.
