Two Islamic clergy men are now in police custody for allegedly kidnapping a six-year-old boy.

The incident reportedly began on August 28, at 2 Jagi Avenue, Itire IIogbo area of Lagos, when one of the men, Mohammed Kazeem, lured the boy (name withheld) to an undisclosed location at Ilogbo.

The parents of the boy are close friends of the clergymen and solicit prayers from them from time to time. After a desperate search for the boy, Mr. Kazeem and his alleged collaborator, Ahmed Rasaki, approached Azeez and Halimat Bashiru, parents of the boy, promising to help them locate their son for a fee - N150,000.

Mr. and Mrs Bashiru ran around to get the money, which the clergymen told them would be used to buy materials for a ritual. Barely two days after the money was provided and the ritual performed, the boy was found close to Jakande Estate in the area on August 30.

But luck ran out on the clergymen when the boy identified Mr. Kazeem as the man who kidnapped him. The father said he left home for Apapa to sell CD players when he got a call that his son was missing. “Before I leave house, the boy get cough and I call Alfa Kazeem make him come take care of am. Because Alfa Kazeem be like our family friend and he dey pray for us well well. My wife sister dey house, she say by the time she come out, say she no see my boy again. We ask Alfa Kazeem, him say him no see the boy.

“We come report the matter to the police station for Okokomaiko, for Iyana-sach; we report for police at Ajagbandi, Ojoo police stations and PPL police station, but they no see the boy.”

He said later, Mr Kazeem and Mr Rasaki said if they could get N150,000 to buy things for sacrifice, the boy would be found. “Them say dem go use the money buy dead body clothes and somebody go wear am. Alfa Kazeem say the person wey wear the cloth go sick well well, but him spirit go locate the boy, bring am back. I refuse to wear the clothe and nobody for my family gree wear am, so na so alfa Kazeem come wear the dead body cloth,” Mr. Bashiru said.

The price of helping?

“Na Alfa Rasaki na him wrap the dead body cloth round Alfa Kazeem, him come sprinkle terali (a spiritual oil) on top the dead man cloth; dem come put mirror on the dead body clothes na so them come tell us say make we go house we go see the boy. Na around 10am dem do the sacrifice, and by 10pm, we come see the boy near Alfa Kazeem house,” Mr. Bashiru said.

The suspects, however, denied the allegation, saying they only provided a spiritual solution to the couples’ problem but their help has landed them in trouble with the law.

“Na when I go koranic school I learn how to do juju and Islam together as I wear the dead body cloth, na him make the boy say na me kidnap am, na the spirit wen dey the dead body cloth dey control the boy, wey make am say na me kidnap am. Me I no know anything, I no be kidnapper.”

When the boy was asked to point to the man who kidnapped him, he pointed at Mr. Kazeem.

“Alfa Kazeem carry me from my house. He gave me N50 to buy buns; he come take me go one baba house they gave me food but I refused to eat. I told them say I want to go house,” the boy said.

The police spokesperson, Frank Mba, said “the case is under investigation and the suspects will be charged to court soon”.
