Ruination as trailer fires up at the scene of the accident at Ikoga/ Adodo road along Badagry Expressway in Mowo bus stop Px Kehinde Gbadamosi

By Evelyn Usman
LAGOS — A 33,000 litre truck loaded with product suspected to be petrol, yesterday went up in flames in Badagry area of Lagos, burning an unidentified man to death while others sustained varying degrees of burns. A total of 22 vehicles were also affected.

Unconfirmed reports, however, said about 10 persons were burnt beyond recognition.

The truck with number plate XB 142 UMZ, heading inward Badagry, was said to have been involved in a lone accident at Adodo junction, by Mowo bus-stop at about 4 p.m. The incident, as gathered, led to an explosion, followed by fire.

Other vehicles trailing the truck were caught in the raging fire. Some of the motorists, according to eye witnesses, jumped out of their vehicles. Some of them were said to have been choked by thick smoke from the burning vehicles and were subsequently rushed to the hospital.

Eye witnesses said most vehicles involved were affected by thick smoke that billowed, as vision was blurred.

A pregnant woman simply identified as Mama Egun, was said to have been the first victim to be rescued by sympathsiers, before the raging fire spread. But thereafter, help as gathered, was far from coming, as sympathizers could no longer go close for fear of falling victims.

As at 6pm, effort to contain the fire was still on. Policemen from Badagry and Ijaniki divisions were drafted to the scene to help in the rescue mission. The incident caused a hitch in the flow of traffic, as the affected vehicles occupied the middle of the major road.

Contacted, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Frank Mba, said the charred remains of an unidentified man was removed from the scene by policemen.

He could, however, not say what caused the lone accident, adding that investigation was still on-going.
