President Goodluck Jonathan and his deputy, Alhaji Namadi Sambo, have said any gang-up against them in their determination to win the presidential nomination of the Peoples Democratic Party will fail.

The duo said it was only through ballot box that Nigerians would choose their leaders.

It would be recalled that four PDP aspirants from the north – former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Dr. Bukola Saraki, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (retd.) and a former National Security Adviser, Gen. Aliyu Gusau (retd.), had in a joint statement on Monday claimed that they were going ahead with the decision to adopt one of them to confront Jonathan at the party’s primaries.

They said in a joint statement by their directors of campaign that there was no iota of truth in newspaper reports that the Mallam Adamu Ciroma-led committee was having problems arriving on consensus candidate.

Those who signed the statement were Udenta O. Udenta, Chris Mammah, Chief Dr. Raymond Dokpesi and Sen. Ben Obi.

But the Goodluck-Sambo campaign organisation in the statement on Monday said such a gang-up was bound to fail.

The statement, which was signed by the Director of Media and Publicity of the organization, Mr. Sully Abu, also restated its faith in the ballot box as the only viable means through which Nigerians would determine their next president.

The organisation derided what it called the so-called consensus arrangement by some presidential aspirants in the party, saying it was a gang up that would fail.

The statement added that the arrangement by Babangida, Gusau, Abubakar and Saraki would fail because it was not based on any principle or programme.

Neither, it said, was it in the interest of the Nigerian people “who have seen such a gang-ups in the past come to nothing in spite of the unnecessary dust raised.”

The statement added, “The consensus arrangement being pursued is based on sheer opportunism and driven by an undemocratic and illiberal spirit.

“That is why they have continued to be at pains to explain that they are at work, irrevocably committed to the success of the arrangement.
