The Chairman, Globacom, Dr. Mike Adenuga, said in a recorded speech that the commencement of operation by Glo 1 would change Nigeria’s business landscape in an unprecedented manner. According to him, broadband access and other services will now be affordable in Nigeria, giving Nigerians the opportunity to compete with the rest of the world.
“From e-commerce to e-learning, Nigerians can compete with the rest of the world on the same footings with the Glo 1,” he said.
The Group Chief Operating Officer, Globacom Mr. Mohamed Jameel, in his remarks, pointed out that all sectors of the nation’s economy and the entire African continent would benefit immensely from the window of global opportunity that the submarine cable would offer. According to him, the submarine cable, which has 16 landing points in Europe, North and West Africa, has been integrated with the over 10,000 km nationwide optic fibre cable of Globacom.
“This means Nigerians from wherever they are can now enjoy ultra-fast Internet services and reliable download and upload of data from anywhere in the world,” he said.
He further listed the benefits accruable to the nation to include 99.9 per cent up time reliability and high speed data, voice and video connectivity. He said these would meet the large bandwidth requirements of direct consumers and other service providers.
“Glo 1 will aid on-line diagnosis and video conferencing during surgery and research, while distance learning will be made easy by enabling a class of students and lecturers in West Africa to participate in a real time class in Europe, America and any other part of the world,” he explained.
Glo 1 will also facilitate premium video conferencing between multiple locations across the country and the West African region, thus reducing operational cost incurred in traveling by corporate organisations.
The high point of the inauguration was the demonstration of a live video conferencing between Lagos and Hong Kong, witnessed by guests.
Senate President, David Mark, promised that the Senate would offer adequate support to Globacom and other Nigerian businesses through right legislations. Mark noted that if Globacom had achieved the herculean task of laying a fibre cable from London to Lagos, despite the country’s harsh business environment, much could be done under the right atmosphere.
