His name is always in the news, apparently because of his controversial figure and his choice of showbiz as a profession. Fifty-four-year- old Charles Oputa (a.k.a Charly Boy) is again mired in controversy as critics in the music industry accuse him of being the cog in the wheel of progress.

CB, as he is better known among close friends, has been accused of pocketing the Performing Musicians Employers Association (PMAN) which he served as the seventh president for two years. In fact, he was even blamed for installing and removing his successor, a crime which critics say makes him to hire and fire the immediate past president, Bolaji Rosiji.

And as if these were not enough, CB was also held responsible for paving the way for the incumbent president, Tee Mac and that very son, Tee Mac might suffer the same fate which his predecessor suffered under the "godfather.”

In this brief interview with the Area Fada, Daily Sun learnt more about CB and his brand.

The brand, Charly Boy
I’m a man of passion, great passion, my story is a peculiar one, my life has been a complicated one, but my focus has been a constistent one. I have always had fun with whatever I choose to throw myself into, never had time for people’s misconceptions, misgivings or lack of understanding about my approach or tactics. I have always believed in my God given abilities and capabilities and above all, I have always believed in myself and the sincerity of purpose.

I guess in a lot of ways, my pedigree laid the foundation of who I am today, because I was brought up on an overdose of morality, spirituality and from an early age, the word character was defined by my father for me to emulate. The Charly Boy brand was forged in the fire of life. I have had my fair share of setbacks, upstream struggle, most of the time swimming against the current, but with the understanding that we only get burdened with as much as we can carry, because God will never give you a burden that is above your power. So in all the numerous battles, crusades, social works and agitations for positive reforms, I made enemies, made mistakes, felt pains and loneliness because of the path I chose to travel. In all, my experience have made me stronger and wiser not weaker.

Tenure as PMAN president
I will always do what I feel is just and right. If people feel that after I have sacrificed two years of my time in PMAN, that I would just walk away not minding if the place falls or collapses, they are wrong. I’m the seventh president of PMAN, yet never in the history has any former president continued to play a fatherly role in the union as I’m even giving time and finances to see that the dream stays alive. I’m expected to walk away from it all not caring what happens to it afterwards?
