Paul Scholes claims Jose Mourinho has had to drastically lower his expectations after “dropping down” a level at Tottenham .

Mourinho joined Spurs in November 2019 after nearly two decades managing some of the biggest clubs in Europe, including Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United.

The Portuguese has won countless honours over the course of his decorated career, but is yet to end Spurs’ 13-year wait for silverware.

Tottenham suffered a shock exit from the Europa League in March and their hopes of a trophy this season rest on their Carabao Cup final against holders Manchester City later this month.

Given Mourinho is now competing for honours at the less prestigious end of the spectrum, Scholes believes there can be no doubt his career has taken a downward trajectory.

“He’s at Tottenham and Tottenham are a club that I expect to try and challenge to win a League Cup or FA Cup,” Manchester United legend Scholes said of Mourinho.

“But other than that, getting in the top four is a success for them and that’s just the level he’s dropped down to now.”

In a thorough assessment of Mourinho’s first 18 months at Spurs boss, Scholes added: “I think he’s doing alright, isn’t he? They’re three points off the top four, in the final of the League Cup.

“Okay, they had a big disappointment I suppose in the Europa League which is something Tottenham should be aspiring to win.

“I think he’s done alright but that’s the club he’s at now. He’s not at a club where they are expected to win leagues.

“He’s done brilliant jobs where he’s been most of the time. You think of the top clubs he’s been at: your Real Madrids, your Inter Milans, your Chelsea when he first came over.

“It didn’t quite work out at United as he would have thought it, although he was the last person to win a trophy here which was the Europa League.

“But again, that’s not something United should be aspiring to. It’s Tottenham, what do you expect? Finish top four is the best they can do, hopefully win a League Cup or an FA Cup. I don’t think you can do much more at a club like Tottenham.”
