High-life Legend Oliver De Coque Honored By Google On His 74th birthday

Nigerian Highlife music legend, Oliver De Coque, has been today honored with a Google doodle in commemoration of his 74th posthumous birthday. The Google doodle was created by Lagos-based artist, Ohab TBJ. Ohab shared the artwork on Instagram stating it was a dream come true,

“Ayeeeeeeeeeeeee. Darling I illustrated a @google Doodle. It’s a doodle to commemorate the late Oliver De Coque, a Nigerian guitarist and one of Africa’s prolific recording artist, on his birthday today.

Oliver Sunday Akanite, better known as Oliver De Coque was born on April 14, 1947 at Nnewi, Anambra state. He was a foremost Highlife musician and was also a Lead guitarist who was active from 1965 till June 2008 when he died.

His career began at the tender age of 11, taught to play the guitar by Piccolo, a Congolese guitarist living in Nigeria. Serving an apprenticeship with juju stars Sunny Agaga and Jacob Oluwale, he was a star by his late teens.

Oliver is also considered as the most flamboyant Igbo musician, he spent N30,000 on his beard weekly and that amounted to N120,000 monthly. Attracting international attention with a London performance in 1973, he played on Prince Nico Mbarga‘s album Sweet Mother four years later. The highlife legend died in June 2008 after complications arising from diabetes.

I had no idea that Google honored him in their doodle. They need to provide some additional info about their doodles. Sometimes their messages are unclear. They do honors some famous music players worldwide. Still, the rest just simply cannot get what a specific doodle is dedicated for.

Last year they dedicated a doodle to Lynn Anderson after her death was announced. She was a famous country singer. But the message was unclear, so I couldn’t get what happened to her. But, I’ve downloaded a country guitar tab with her famous songs to play.
