President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday hosted his predecessor, Dr Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa, Abuja over the unfolding crisis in Mali.

This was disclosed by Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina in a Friday statement.

Jonathan is Special Envoy and ECOWAS mediator to the West African country.

Reports on Thursday from Jonathan’s office had said that Nigeria’s former president, who traveled to Bamako on Tuesday, helped secure the release of Mali’s interim President, Bah Ndaw and Prime Minister, Moctar Ouane.

The duo was detained alongside other key government figures after Vice President, Col. Assimi Goita led a military coup that ousted them from power.

According to Adesina’s statement, the President called on the actors in the political crisis to come together for the peace and unity of the country.

According to President Buhari,
Quote
“a situation where most parts of the country are in the hands of insurgents calls for a consensus and restoration of peace, not a further escalation of the crisis.”

“Former President Goodluck had briefed the President on the current situation in Mali after meeting with the key political actors ahead of the meeting of ECOWAS leaders under the Chairmanship of President Nana Akufo-Addo of the Republic of Ghana.

“He added that the meeting of the regional leaders was necessary to urgently find an acceptable solution to the current impasse in the West African nation,”
the statement read.
