NIGERIA requires $10 billion annually to fully develop its electricity generation, distribution and transmission. If this amount is available for a few years, according to President Goodluck Jonathan, there will be stable electricity across the country.

WHILE it is only $10 billion that the country needs annually for this, individual Nigerians spend $13 billion annually to import diesel generators and this situation is not acceptable to the president.

WE wonder why this is unacceptable to the president. It is just a sign of a great country with good people. Nigerians know what is good for them and they are doing just that.

THOUSANDS of homes in the country supply their own electricity through diesel or petrol-run generators. On the average, each family spends about N5,000 to fuel its generator every month.

BUT since this situation is not acceptable to the president, Nigerians should accept the position of their president as patriotism demands. That patriotism should start from the president.

HENCEFORTH, President Jonathan should order an immediate stop to the use of generators at the Presidential Villa, Aso Rock.  He should also order all ministers and heads of parastatal agencies to do the same at their homes and offices.

AT the next Council of States meeting, the president should convince members on the need for them to stop using generators both at homes and in their offices as well. He should then send a bill to the National Assembly making it an offence, punishable by two years imprisonment, without an option of fine, for anybody, including foreigners, the use of generators in any part of the country.

THE bill should compel all generator users at all levels to contribute N5,000 every month to a fund to be tagged National Electricity Fund. If this is done for five years, Nigeria will certainly get it right in the power sector.
