The virtues of peacemaking is extolled by all. But, sometimes, peacemakers get caught in the crossfire, leaving them with an ugly experience to tell. In this report by Olalekan Olabulo, one peacemaker was not that fortunate. He got caught in the web of a fight between a man and his wife which left him stone dead.
It was supposed to be a mediation between a man and his wife, who had woken up their co-tenants with their usual feud. It, however, turned out to be a journey of no return for a Good Samaritan, whose death has become a source of concern to residents of Egan , a suburb in Alimosho Local Government area of Lagos State .
The death of Suraju Adewale has not only thrown residents of Egan into mourning, it has also unsettled the police in Lagos State as the two principal gladiators in the fight that led to Suraju’s death had disappeared into thin air .
The Nigerian Tribune gathered one Dada Ganiu and his wife , identified as Anu Musa were embroiled in a clash that attracted other residents of the building where they lived and an attempt by the late Adewale to separate them led to his death.
Having sustained injuries during the fight, Adewale was rushed to a nearby hospital, where his admission was reportedly delayed and as a result, he lost so much blood that eventually led to his death, a few hours after. His remains have since been deposited at Isolo General Hospital’s public mortuary for autopsy.
An earlier report that the warring couple had been arrested and detained at the State CID, Panti, Yaba has, however, been refuted by the image maker in charge of the state police command, Frank Mba, who informed the Nigerian Tribune that the suspects had ran away. Mba also said that the police are finding it difficult to trace their whereabouts, since nobody could produce their photographs.
Residents of 10, Baba Dada Street, Egan Igando, the place of the incident, were woken up around 2.40 a.m. last Sunday by the noise from a man and his wife, who were engaged in a fight and attempt by one of their co-residents to mediate in the dispute led to his being stabbed , in a yet to be fully ascertained circumstance.
A police source who spoke with the Nigerian Tribune under the condition of anonymity stated that the runaway suspects had reportedly constituted themselves as a nuisance not only to their co-residents but to other residents of the street. He stated that Ganiu and his wife habitually fought each other, at every slight provocation.
According to the source, reports by the residents of Baba Dada Street are conflicting on who actually stabbed the late Adewale. He stated that while some reports have it that it was Ganiu that stabbed him, others believe it was the wife, who mistakenly stabbed the middle aged man.
He (police source) asserted that the whole incident actually started on Saturday night, when Ganiu and his wife were involved in a heated argument but the intervention of other residents of the building prevented the duo from engaging in a fisticuff.
He added that the belief of the residents of the building that they had settled the quarrel between Ganiu and his wife was, however, disproved around 3 a.m. on Sunday morning, when Ganiu‘s wife, Anu, raised an alarm.
The deceased had reportedly volunteered to separate the fighting couple, when other residents had refused to do so. It was said that one of them had a knife.
The co-residents of the fighting couple on seeing a knife, had receded and watched the fighters from a distance .
The fight had reportedly been on for for a while when the late Adewale who was one of the few men around, went in between them and got stabbed.
Preliminary investigations by the police suggest that Ganiu may be responsible for the killing since the late Adewale was allegedly holding Anu, when he got stabbed.
The incident has since forced other residents of the building to relocate for fear of being arrested by the police. According to a police source from Igando police station, efforts by the police from the division to speak with co-residents of the deceased and the suspects have proved abortive.
Mba described the death of the Good Samaritan as “disheartening and avoidable” adding that the state police boss, Marvel Akpoyibo, has ordered a full scale investigation into the incident.
The police spokesperson also enjoined residents of the state to be cautious and avoid domestic violence. He urged them to refrain from the use of dangerous weapons during misunderstanding.
Mba claimed that the police in the state are facing a serious challenge in their efforts to unravel the build-up and the situation that led to the death of the peacemaker. He stated that the police have in the last two days been trying to get the pictures of the suspects and that of the deceased but all to no avail.
