It’s been more than seven years since the last GUS auditions were held. So there must really be some major thirst for what is arguably Nigeria’s biggest reality TV show. Because 5 days after the organisers announced a return, the show’s servers experienced intense pressure due to the large number of entries.
The producers did not issue a statement. But an insider said they took all precautions to make sure the infrastructure was resilient.
One member of the project team told us: ‘Who would have imagined that in 2021, a website so elaborate would experience so much pressure? They knew the rush would be massive, but no one prepared for the kind of pressure that came in within the first few days of opening registration.
Nigerians appear to love reality TV shows; the GUS show has recorded over half a million applications between 2004 and 2014. Another show, which is totally different from GUS, Big Brother, says it gets up to 10,000 applications every year. And it’s not surprising because the shows promise a combination of fame, money, and guaranteed escape from the hustle and bustle of the country’s labour market .
Gulder Ultimate Search, which borders on the survival instincts of contestants, began in 2004 and ran for 11 seasons before going off air in 2014.
On Wednesday, September 1, 2021, Nigerian Breweries announced that the show is making its comeback with “The Age of Craftsmanship” as the theme of the 2021 edition.
Since Gulder Ultimate Search went off air in 2014, many fans have been calling for its return.
An unofficial spokesperson from the show’s organizers confirmed that they have received over 20,000 entries in the first few days of the show’s return announcement, which temporarily put the servers under pressure as a result of a significant increase in the volume of traffic on Wednesday.”
The team swung into action immediately after to resolve the issue and ensure the website’s servers were in top form for applicants.
The crash of websites is not peculiar to the GUS registration website.
In 2016, Canada’s immigration website crashed during the US Presidential election. The crash was traced to the activities of Americans exploring means to leave the country following Donald Trump’s victory at the poll.
In 2020, the website of a US government agency, the Selective Service System (SSS), crashed over high traffic.
The SSS, a US government agency that registers young men for a potential military draft, linked the crash to “high traffic volumes” as panic spread on the internet over a likely World War III after a US drone strike killed the Iranian general Qassem Suleimani in Baghdad.
GUS has of course since restored all servers and proceeded to register young Nigerians determined to get a slot on the show. We’re looking forward to witnessing what promises to be an unprecedented edition!
