A total of 39 militants from the Niger Delta brought to Ilorin National Centre for Agricultural Mechanization (NCAM) for training embarked on peaceful demonstration on yesterday blocking the major Ilorin-Ajase-Ipo Highway for several hours.

Daily Sun investigations revealed that the ex-militant who arrived the centre two days ago for the training in mechanised agriculture took to the street over poor treatment and non-payment of their allowances.
One of the ex-militants who simply identified himself as ‘The Bull’ noted that their action was just to warn the authority to consider their welfare.
According to him, the authority involved should pay their allowances and benefits without further delay.

The ex-militants were also requesting the authority to lodge them in a five-star hotel and not in the bush where they were currently lodged in NCAM, about 15 kilometres to Ilorin, the state capital. However, the Acting Executive Director of NCAM, Dr. Ikechukwu Azogu described the action of the ex-militant as very unfortunate and premature.

According to him, the centre was approached by the amnesty programme to train some of the ex-militant based on some conditions and agreements. He explained that the ex-militant arrived the centre on Tuesday and started complaining about the centre was not in the heart of the city but in the bush. Azogu noted that the centre had provided hostel accommodation with adequate facilities for the militants including feeding arrangements and self-contained rooms with toilet and bathroom.

The acting director said all efforts to persuade them to see reason proved abortive as they rejected their food on Wednesday night and demanded to be moved to a five-star hotel. Azogu pointed out that they have been harassing his staff, cooks and everybody in the centre, saying that everybody was now afraid, while some had deserted their duty post. He stated that he had reported the matter to the security agents in the state and the Amnesty Centre, saying that the centre was already mobilising resources to settle the one week allowance of the ex-militants.
