In separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Lagos, the residents said the bins would facilitate the removal of the high volume of waste generated in the area.
NAN reports that apart from its dense population, the area is home to one of the biggest and busiest commercial districts in the Lagos metropolis, the Mile 12 Market.
NAN reports that drainage channels blocked through indiscriminate dumping of refuse have been identified as the major reason for the perennial flooding of the area.
“With our experience during the last flooding, we don’t know what may happen if we continue to dump refuse anywhere,” said Babatunde Bakare.
The respondent, who is a businessman in Mile 12, explained that the provision of refuse bins would help the residents to contribute immensely to the beautification exercise of the state government.
A 65-year-old resident of Mile 12, Mr. Sikiru Fatai. lamented that the absence of refuse bins in the area had forced people in the locality to dump their waste in the drains.
“Some of the residents dump their refuse on the streets at night because they don’t have money to pay cart-pushers,” Fatai said.
Mrs Adebola Wasiu, a trader at the Mile 12 market, reiterated the need for government to provide refuse bins on some major roads in the area.
Wasiu noted that with the dry season drawing near, empty packets of sachet water and plastic bottles of fruit drinks would further litter most of the streets unless the refuse bins were urgently provided.
“During the rainy season, most of the houses here are flooded due to blocked drains. But I believe if the government provides us with refuse bins, this will reduce,” she said.
Mrs. Ngozi Emeka, another trader, said the provision of bins would facilitate prompt removal of waste and address the issue of offensive atmospheric odour hanging over most of the area.
