What could have been a bloody violence was yesterday averted by men of the Oyo State Police Command at Mapo Hall, in Ibadan, venue of the pro-Akala rally organised by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stakeholders in Oyo State.
Alhaji Mukaila Lamidi (a.k.a. Auxiliary), the deputy to the former, Alhaji Lateef Salako (Eleweomo) was arrested by the police alongside 50 other members of the union who had stormed the venue of the rally in 16 NURTW buses and private luxurious cars allegedly belonging to a faction of the crisis ridden union.
Auxilliary and his cohort were caught with dangerous weapon like pump-action machine guns, pistols, charms, cutlasses, daggers, whips and other dangerous weapons.
The staunch supporters of Governor Alao-Akala and his second term bid and the other hoodlums were immediately moved to the Eleyele Police headquarters for interrogation. Police sources said upon investigation all the suspects would be charged to court for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
While speaking with Daily Sun, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Baba Adisa Bolanta confirmed that some member of the union were arrested by his men at the rally with dangerous weapons found on them, but could not however ascertain whether, Auxilliary was among those arrested. He said thorough investigation would be carried out on the matter.
Addressing the rally tagged: Ibadan Tile Toko (Ibadan City and Less City), Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala berated the oppositions within and outside the state to his second term ambition, saying their threat to dislodge him from Agodi Government House was an empty threat that would not see the light of the day. Akala said: “The threats coming from oppositions are mere ranting of an ant” since according to him, the PDP would continue to govern the state for a very long time to come.
The rally organized by party’s stakeholders in Ibadan land under the leadership of the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Taofeek Oladejo Arapaja in support of the Akala/Arapaja beyond 2011 agenda had in attendance, two former governors of the state, Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo and Chief Kolapo Ishola, former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Richard Akinjide. Also in attendance were serving state government functionaries and chairmen of all the 11 local government councils from Ibadan extraction.
It would however be recalled that many of the aggrieved founding fathers and elders of the PDP in Oyo State notably Senator Lekan Balogun, former Governor Rashidi Ladoja, the Senate Leader, Senator Teslim Folarin, and some of Governor Alao-Akala’s kinsmen from his hometown (Ogbomoso) such as Ayo Adeseun, Fatai Buhari, Ambassador Yomi Akintola, among others, were hell-bent on scuttling the second term bid of the governor for reasons they had been advancing to the party’s national officers.
Also the opposition Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) led by the former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and former Governor Lam Adesina of the state had been threatening to take over Oyo State ‘from the type of Akala’s politics’ which they said had left people more impoverished.
But the governor who look undisturbed with all these threats danced joyfully to the melodious tunes of King of Fuji Music, Saheed Osupa who played at the rally as well as the intermittent songs from the party supporters, who on many occasions, eulogized him “as the father of them all.”
Akala also chorused different songs to the jubilant and tumultuous crowd of party faithful from Ibadan and Ibadan less cities saying “Oyo State belongs to us all and that Ogbomoso is an expansion of Ibadan” with special emphasis that “this crowd is not from Ogbomoso, they are made of our good people and lovers here in Ibadan, the city of warriors.”
