The Round of 16 draw was made at Nyon on Friday 17 December 2010. This article gives the full draw and picks out some of the more interesting ties.
The teams have battled out the group stages and half have been eliminated and the remaining sixteen clubs were drawn out for the first round of the knockout stage in Nyon, Switzerland, on Friday 17 December 2010. This was a seeded draw in that group winners could only be drawn against the runners up in a different group and clubs from the same country could not play each other.
The Round of Sixteen will be a two-legged knockout with away goals counting double if the teams are tied after two ninety-minute games. If they are still tied, the second leg will go to extra time and then a penalty shoot-out.
The group winners (listed second in the draw below) will play their away leg on 15th, 16th, 22nd or 23rd February 2011 and will play their home legs on 8th, 9th, 15th or 16th March 2011. The sixteen clubs in the draw include seven former winners, nine teams that made it to this stage last year and three clubs that have never made the knockout stage of the Champions League before. Uefa Champions League Round of 16 Ties to Watch Out For
The big match of the round has to be the re-run of last season’s Champions League final when holders Inter Milan face Bayern Munich. The German side will be out for revenge against the Italian champions especially as the special one Jose Mourhino is no longer in charge. He is in charge, of course, of Real Madrid who will be happy with a trip to Olympique Lyonnais and will be favourites to win that. One of the exciting matches has to be the pairing of Arsenal and Barcelona – that will be a game that will pull in the viewers as both play attacking, attractive football. It is also a repeat of last season’s quarter final, when Barcelona came out on top. One of the other two London teams – Chelsea – will be happy with a trip to Copenhagen whereas the other – Tottenham Hotspur – face a tough game against AC Milan.
Manchester United will be satisfied to draw Olympique de Marseille and will be well fancied to progress. The other two ties see Roma face Shakhtar Donetsk and Valencia against Shalke 04.
