Are these really contradictions or just difference in interpretations by different scholars?
Could there have been mistakes in translations? Only those that have read the different
(languages or) versions of the Koran can tell.

you'll do worse to yourself if you talk without sufficient knowledge; if you don't know the Qur'an offhand i think you should get a hard-copy to read from and enquire about the verses you don't get right from a reliable learned scholar.
likewise, it's better you study this topic in Usool-ul-Fiqh "Al-Mujmal wal Mufasol".
