A federal judge in Greenbelt, Maryland, United States has sentenced a Nigerian, Mr. Emenike Nwankwoala, to more than three years in prison for shipping guns and ammunition to Nigeria, the Associated Press reports.
Nwankwoala, 50, a former state probation officer, was sentenced on Monday in the US District Court in Greenbelt. Prosecutors said Nwankwoala told an undercover agent from Immigration and Customs Enforcement that he had been buying shotguns and shipping them to Nigeria for the past decade, turning a large profit. Nwankwoala told the agent that he hid the guns in shipping containers with vehicles.
An Iranian, Azim Aghajani, who allegedly conspired with three Nigerians - Ali Usman Abbas Jega, Aliyu Oroji Wamako and Muhammad Tukur Umar - to import 13 containers laden with rockets and other ammunition into Nigeria on October 25, 2010, was granted bail on December 23, 2010 by an Abuja High Court.
The Iranian had been in the custody of the State Security Service since November 25 when he was arraigned before an Abuja Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Wuse Zone 2 alongside his alleged co-conspirators.
Late last year, the Nigerian Navy and Nigerian Customs Service made a wave of seizures of weapons and military vehicles at the Lagos ports.
The Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ogbor, on November 23, 2010 told newsmen in Lagos that eight military trucks were seized by the Nigerian Navy at Tin Can Island Port, Apapa, Lagos. Speaking at a news conference in Lagos, Ogbor said the trucks were covered with a camouflage tarpaulin and were neatly tucked into a container.
“Items found in the trucks included a Chevrolet double cabin vehicle covered with a camouflage tarpaulin spread neatly tucked into a container. Inside the vehicle were some pistols, hundreds of live ammunition, bulletproof jackets, military boots and sundry prohibited related items. Heavy duty military trucks used for the movement of troops and logistics were also impounded by the command. The trucks are seven and are painted in military colour.”
Also on November 23, the Area Controller, Tin Can Island, NCS, Mr. Austen Warikoru, displayed two pistols and 1,431 rounds of ammunition discovered in a vehicle brought into the country from the US in a container.
Speaking at a news conference in Lagos, he said, “The concealment of contraband items arm and ammunitions was in a 40ft container UESU 456777/3. The suspects, Mr. Ifeanyi Edom, who is the clearing agent and the purported brother inlaw to the importer, Mr. Ume Uzoezie, are in Customs custody. The container was re-examined on November 20, 2010 in the presence of the suspects.”
He stated that the container contained two used pistols, one AR-7 Explorer with S/No A124431-CAL.22 and AMPSOR 206 CAL. 38 Special with serial no A946122. He gave the details of the ammunitions as 1100 rounds of Remington brand of 22 calibre bullets, 100 Remington special of 32 calibre; 100 Monarch brand of 38 calibre and 31 Acquita (Super-maxim) of 22 calibre.
Other items discovered in the container were used clothes, various gifts items, personal belongings and four cars.

It is absolutely riddiculos and disgraceful that masses are suffering in
Nigeria while the president wants to allocate 1.5 million naira daily on food. While vice president proposes all this ridiculous amounts on renovation that is not neccessary. There is no electricity in Nigeria, no good roads, hospitals have no equipments or medicine, schools have no books or computers and we are spending the nations wealth on furniture and food? No wonder the country is in such a state. Na wa o for the leaders. This has been going on for 40 years or so, wake up

Emerging details of this year’s budget proposals indicate that the Presidency has proposed to spend N574m on food in 2011. When this total is spread over the 365 days in 2011, the average amount that the Presidency will spend on food per day is a little over N1.57m.

The N574m is N168.7m more than the N405.3m spent by the same office on ‘food stuff supplies’ in 2010. However, the 2010 figure is exclusive of the sum expended on foods eaten during summits. A separate sub-head for “meals/entertainment” for summits held at the State House last year totalled N73m.

I'm not sure whether you are insane Grin or joking, but either way, it's in bad taste.

It (N574m) is also part of the N13.9bn that will be used to fund sub-heads and the overhead cost of the State House or Presidential Villa.

The details, which our correspondent obtained on Monday, showed that the rehabilitation of the State House Guest House in the Marina, Lagos, would cost N1.2bn.

Similarly, “residential furniture” items for the Presidency are to be purchased for a whopping N1.1bn this year.

The furnishing of Vice-President’s two guest houses — one in Asokoro and the other called “Aguda House,”— will cost N500m.

The furniture for the guest house in Asokoro will cost N100m, while that of Aguda House will consume N400m.

Incidentally, the lounge of Aguda Guest House was extended in 2010 for N50m. Another guest house was also furnished for the Vice-President’s use in 2010 for N50m.

This year, the “purchase of canteen/kitchen equipment” for the Presidential Villa will also gulp N553.6m.

Further details of the 2011 budget estimates showed that out of the N553.6m, N150m will be used to fund “household equipment and materials for the Vice-President’s office.”

However, in 2010, a provision of N240m was made for the purchase of office, household and kitchen equipment for Asokoro Guest House.

Other details show that the Director of Protocol to the Vice-President, his Aide- De- Camp, and other aides are to be housed in new official quarters to cost N560m in 2011.

Dodan Barracks in Lagos will also benefit from the presidential renovation in 2011, as it has a provision of N400m in the budget.

President Goodluck Jonathan presented a N4.23tn budget to the National Assembly for approval on December 15.

The sum comprises N198.12bn for statutory transfers, N542.32bn for debt service; N2,481.71tn for recurrent (non-debt) expenditure; and N1,005.9tn for capital expenditure.

The government also earmarked the sum of N347.2bn for critical infrastructure development.

This includes capital allocations of N86.25bn for power; N20.74bn for Aviation; N10.27bn for petroleum resources; N136.88bn for works; N48.9bn for transport; N44.18bn for the Federal Capital Territory; N35.01bn for education; N33.35bn for health; N29.46bn for agricultural development; and N24.76bn for water resources.
