THE Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), on Wednesday, faulted the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recruit members of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as ad hoc staff for voter registration across the country and blamed the Federal Government for allowing such practice.

The union also condemned in strong terms, the closure of private and public primary and secondary schools in the country for three weeks, for the purpose of voter registration.

NUT president, Michael Alogba Olukoya, while speaking with newsmen after the 2011 NUT national solemn assembly held at its headquarters in Abuja, said the union had always advocated the use of workers who were aBosom  with their various terrains across the country.

He said using the youth corps members for voter registration was to jeopardise their lives with the state of insecurity in the wake of the recent sporadic ethnic and religious violence, as well as bomb blasts in some parts of the nation.

“There are a lot of things that this government is doing that we need to correct. Look at the use of NYSC for the election, especially the voter registration. It is the considered opinion of the union that we make use of workers. They are more matured. They understand the terrain of where they work, in case anybody wants to play foul of the law, they could easily be identified.
