Comprehensive List of Nigerian Sports Heroes and Their Contributions to the Nation's Sporting Legacy

Austin Jay-Jay Okocha

Forty-nine-year-old Okocha is one of Africa’s most famous footballers. Beginning his career at Enugu Rangers, Okocha’s skill and dribbling ability distinguished him from his peers, and he soon moved abroad to German Bundesliga 3 side Borrusia Neunkirchen. The coaches at Neunkirchen were impressed with him, but his skills meant he was destined for prime time. Okocha soon moved to Eintracht Frankfurt, where he scored 18 goals in 90 appearances, including the world-famous goal against Oliver Kahn.

The goal was voted goal of the season and year, respectively, by several magazines, including Sportschau. Okocha later played for Fenerbache, Bolton, Hull City, and Paris Saint Germain, where he mentored a young talented Brazilian named Ronaldinho. Jay-Jay was instrumental in helping Bolton avoid relegation, earning him the “So good they named him twice” chant that has become synonymous with his name.

Okocha’s international career was lively, helping Nigeria qualify for the 1994 World Cup and winning the African Nations Cup in the same year. Okocha was also an integral part of the Dream Team that defeated Argentina and Brazil in their journey to becoming Olympic Champions in 1996. Upon his retirement, FIFA inducted Okocha as a Legend in its FIFA 15 game series as a testament to his footballing prowess.

Kanu Nwankwo (Papilo)

Nwankwo Kanu was also a member of Nigeria’s Olympic gold-winning squad, scoring the golden goal that took Nigeria into her first-ever Olympic final. Kanu had a successful career, starting at Iwuanyanwu Nationale in the Nigerian Premier League before moving to Ajax after the 1993 U-17 World Cup. At Ajax, he made 54 appearances, scoring 25 times and winning the UEFA Champions League title. 1996 brought Kanu his show time, captaining Nigeria to Olympic gold and winning the African Footballer of the Year award.

However, he was diagnosed with a heart defect threatening his football career. Fortunately, surgery to replace Papilo’s aortic valve was successful, and he could return to the soccer pitch. Kanu only made 12 appearances at Inter before moving to England, playing for Arsenal, West Bromwich Albion, and Portsmouth. Kanu is one of Africa’s most decorated footballers, winning the Olympic Gold, the UEFA Champions League, the Europa League, the UEFA Super Cup, three Eredivisie titles, two FA Cups, and two Premier League titles.

John Obi Mikel

Mikel is one of the most famous Nigerian soccer players in modern times. Storming to the limelight at the 2005 U-17 World Cup, where he won the Silver Ball, the midfielder's career began with some drama. Chelsea and Manchester United were involved in a tussle to sign the young talent, with both claiming to have agreements with the player. Eventually, the matter was resolved out of court, and Mikel moved to Chelsea. His time at Chelsea was full of memories as he made 249 appearances, winning eleven trophies, including the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and two English Premier League titles.

On the international front, Mikel captained Nigeria to win the African Nations Cup (ANC) in 2013, winning bronze medals in 2006 and 2010. The team also secured third place in the 2019 ANC and the 2016 Summer Olympics. Mikel also played for Middlesbrough, Stoke City, Trabzonspor, and Kuwait SC in a career spanning 17 years.

Obafemi Martins

Former Inter Milan striker Obafemi Martins, nicknamed Obagoal, will be remembered for his acrobatic celebrations. The pacey striker is one of Nigeria’s finest in front of goal. Martins was a lethal force against any opposition with his pace and strength on the ball. He played for top clubs such as Inter Milan, Newcastle, and Wolfsburg and was one of the earliest stars in the MLS, taking a two-year stint at Seattle Sounders, where he bagged 40 goals in 72 appearances.

Martins also played for Shanghai Shenhua, winning the Chinese Fa Cup top scorer award in 2017. His trophy cabinet is enviable, featuring a Serie A winners medal, two Coppa Italia wins, and a Bronze medal from the African Cup of Nations in 2006. Martins also featured for Rubin Kazan, Levante, and Wuhan in his 21-year career.

Rashidi Yekini

Rashidi Yekini is a golden name in the history of Nigerian football. The towering striker is Nigeria’s all-time top goalscorer. Rashidi is also famous for scoring Nigeria’s first-ever goal at the World Cup in 1994 and being the first Nigerian player to win the award for the African Footballer of the Year. Yekini spent most of his career playing in the Nigerian football league, although he had brief stints abroad with Olympiacos, Vitoria Setubal, Sporting Gijon, and Africa Sports.
