It was the second fatal road accident on Katsina – Kano Road, Katsina State within a week. The first crash claimed four lives and left a dozen with various degrees of injuries. Unlike the previous accident, the latest was made more sorrowful because of the degree of devastation to both lives and property.
Eleven people died as a result of the ghastly accident that occurred at Yan Rumfa village, Charanchi Local Government Area, not far away from the scene of the previous accident near Rimi town.
The visages of many passengers and residents of the area who saw the charred remains of the adults and children holed in the two ill-fated vehicles, when Daily Sun arrived at the death site, were as gloom as the people were shocked at the gory sight. The pictures of about nine victims burnt to ashes stirred sorrow and pity in all.
Many of the people, who arrived at the scene long after the fire that engulfed the affected vehicles had been put off, wept loudly. A staff of Kankia General Hospital who was one of the early good Samaritans to arrive at the scene of the accident, told Daily Sun that they got there at about mid-night of the fateful day.
The man who simply identified himself as Ahmed said a J5 bus believed to have taken off at Charanchi Market for Garu village collided with a Peugeot 505 station wagon on its way from Kano. He disclosed that they rescued the driver of the J5 bus and two passengers but the passengers died later in the hospital. The bus driver who cheated death, he said, escaped with three fractures on his hand and leg.
Checks revealed that the bus driver, conductor and two others were returning to Garu after taking some cows to Charanchi market when accident occured. It was also gathered that the station wagon was on its way to Maradi in Niger Republic with six passengers and two kids on board but none of them escaped death. Neither those who arrived there shortly after the mishap nor the residents of the nearby communities could tell how it occurred. It is believed that the vehicles had a head on collision and immediately burst into flames.
