In a bid to address the economic constraints facing Nigerian universities, President Bola Ahmad Tinubu has called on higher education institutions to explore alternative funding avenues. The President made this assertion during the 6th & 7th combined convocation ceremony of Federal University, Dutse, held on Saturday.
Represented by Professor Kabir Bala, the Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, President Tinubu emphasized the government's commitment to creating an enabling environment for universities, despite limited resources. He stressed the importance of universities proactively seeking self-sufficiency in the current economic climate.
"Universities play a crucial role in national development, and it is imperative for them to diversify their funding sources," President Tinubu remarked. "While the government will continue to provide support within its means, universities must explore international collaborations and funding opportunities for research."
The President highlighted the need for universities to attract funds globally and enhance their internal revenue generation capabilities. He acknowledged the challenges posed by economic constraints but assured that the government would remain steadfast in its support for educational institutions.
"As we navigate through these economic challenges, it is essential for universities to consider innovative strategies for resource mobilization," President Tinubu stated. "Our administration is committed to providing the necessary support to enable universities to achieve their objectives and contribute to national development."
The President's remarks underscore the importance of universities adapting to the evolving economic landscape and seeking sustainable funding solutions to maintain their academic excellence and research initiatives.
