The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Adegoke Fayoade, has clarified that the police officers accused of assaulting lawyer Timothy Olamide at the State Police Command headquarters are officers from outside Lagos state who were on a visit. CP Fayoade made this statement during a meeting with the lawyer and assured that the officers involved would be identified for prompt disciplinary measures.
The lawyer, Timothy Olamide, had earlier shared his ordeal on X, stating that he was beaten by police officers at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters in Ikeja when he went there on behalf of his colleague to inquire about a client who was arrested in February. Olamide recounted being beaten and warned that not all cases could be handled by lawyers, despite approaching the police with respect and humility.
In response to the incident, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, issued a statement explaining that the officers who assaulted the lawyer were visiting policemen from outside Lagos who had come to take over suspects arrested for them by the Lagos State Police Command. SP Hundeyin further stated that the visiting officers had been summoned for an identification parade to enable Olamide to identify the officer involved.
The Lagos State Police Command assured the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) of its commitment to identifying and sanctioning the officer responsible for the unprofessional conduct. The Command urged Lagosians to report any complaints against police actions through the Complaint Response Unit or to senior officers via the provided phone numbers.
