Bauchi State Police have apprehended an ex-convict alongside two other individuals for their alleged involvement in the theft of a motorcycle in the Gidan Ruwa area of the state.
The suspects, identified as Yusuf Adamu, aged 30, Mohammed Sanusi, aged 20, and Masa’ud Ibrahim, also aged 20, reportedly stole a motorcycle valued at N400,000 and subsequently sold it for N100,000.
According to the spokesperson of the command, SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, the arrests came after the police received information on March 15, 2024, regarding the theft of a motorcycle in the vicinity of Gidan Ruwa.
An intensive investigation led to the apprehension of the prime suspects, who confessed to using a fabricated metal object, locally known as "Kati or Chori," to unlock the ignition of the stolen motorcycle. The suspects admitted to selling the motorcycle for N100,000.
Police efforts resulted in the recovery of the stolen motorcycle, the fabricated metal object used in the theft, and the sum of nine thousand naira from the suspects.
Further investigation revealed that the suspects had shared the proceeds of the crime amongst themselves. It was disclosed that one of the masterminds, who is currently at large, received N30,000, while the remaining N70,000 was divided among the three arrested individuals.
Additionally, it was discovered that two of the suspects were already on court bail for similar offenses, while another had a prior conviction for breach of trust and cheating but was granted a state pardon in 2022.
The investigation also uncovered that the suspects had utilized part of the stolen money to lodge in a hotel in Bauchi for one night and purchase illicit substances, cigarettes, and Codeine syrup for their girlfriends.
The suspects are currently in police custody pending further legal proceedings.
