In a distressing turn of events, Mr. Tony Babatunde Daniel, a journalist based in Oyo State, faced harassment and brutality at the hands of Department of State Service (DSS) personnel on Saturday. The incident unfolded at an NNPC petroleum station located just a stone's throw away from the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in the Iyaganku area of Ibadan.

According to Daniel, he was queuing up to purchase petrol when the altercation ensued, leaving him battered and traumatized. His colleagues from the NUJ Secretariat promptly rushed him to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Additionally, his vehicle sustained damage during the confrontation with the armed security operatives.

Reaching out to the DSS for their perspective on the incident proved futile as no response was received by the time of compiling this report.

The incident highlights concerns over the safety and rights of journalists carrying out their duties, particularly in situations where confrontations with security personnel escalate into violence. Such incidents underscore the need for greater accountability and respect for press freedom, ensuring journalists can work without fear of intimidation or harm.
