In a heartwarming tale of enduring love, Cleovis and Arwilda Whiteside, a remarkable couple hailing from Arkansas, have marked an astonishing 84 years of marriage, potentially earning them the title of the longest-married couple in the entire country.
Their remarkable journey began on July 24, 1939, when Cleovis, then 17, and Arwilda, just 13, exchanged vows. Now aged 102 and 98, respectively, the couple attributes the longevity of their union to their unwavering faith in God.
Reflecting on their extraordinary milestone, Arwilda shared with KATV, "We can hardly believe this is happening to us because we feel like we were the least, but God said, 'No. You’ll glorify my name and love one another.'"
To honor their enduring commitment, the Family Council, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting traditional family values, orchestrated a private fish fry reception for the couple and their loved ones.
Since 2019, the Whitesides have been celebrated as the longest-married couple in Arkansas. According to Charisse Dean, project coordinator at the Arkansas Family Council, they may even hold the distinction of being the longest-married couple in the entire United States.
Their love story, which began with a heroic act of protection by Cleovis, has captivated hearts for decades. Meeting again years later at a church box supper, they embarked on a lifelong journey together, thanks in part to matchmaking efforts by Arwilda's friend Caroline.
Today, Cleovis and Arwilda, parents to 12 children, serve as a beacon of inspiration, proving that true love knows no bounds of time. Grateful for the support and well-wishes of their community, they expressed their appreciation at the fish fry event.
"May God bless you and I thank you for being here today, every one of you," remarked Cleovis, epitomizing the enduring spirit of love and devotion that has defined their remarkable union.
