A devastating auto crash in Kogi State has left a trail of tragedy, claiming the lives of 13 individuals and leaving two others injured, according to a statement by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Monday.
The Sector Commander of the Kogi FRSC, Mr. Samuel Oyedeji, revealed that the fatal accident occurred around 7:30 pm on Sunday, March 31, 2024, along the Obajana-Lokoja Road in Lokoja Local Government Area of the state.
The collision involved a commercial Sharon bus and an articulated cement truck, with the accident transpiring near Obajana Market. Oyedeji explained that the Sharon bus had pulled over behind a truck near the market for passengers to make purchases when the cement truck, having lost its brakes, collided with it from behind.
"The impact of the collision ignited a fierce blaze, engulfing the bus and tragically consuming the lives of virtually all passengers on board," stated Oyedeji.
The intensity of the fire thwarted rescue efforts by FRSC personnel, Red Cross Nigeria, and police officers, resulting in the inability to save those trapped inside the burning bus. The inferno also consumed two trucks and a motorcycle in its path.
Oyedeji expressed concern over the challenge of finding a hospital in Kogi willing to accept the charred remains of the victims, suggesting the possibility of a mass burial if no relatives come forward.
Describing the incident as "very sad and unfortunate," the sector commander urged motorists to prioritize safety measures, emphasizing the importance of vehicle maintenance and adherence to speed limits to prevent such tragic accidents on the roads.
