A tragic stampede at the residence of Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko during the distribution of Sallah palliatives has left at least nine individuals feared dead and several others injured, sources report.

The incident, which allegedly occurred on Thursday night, saw a surge of people at the senator's residence, resulting in chaos and panic.

Among the fatalities is Fatima Bala, a volunteer operative with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), who reportedly lost her life while rescuing a child caught in the stampede. Colleagues of the deceased described her as a dedicated officer attached to the Gawon Nama office of the agency.

While there has been no official confirmation from relevant security agencies, sources indicate that the stampede was triggered by the overwhelming crowd at the distribution venue.

Despite inquiries, spokespeople from both the Sokoto State commands of the NSCDC and the police have declined to comment on the matter.

Meanwhile, the Sokoto State chapter of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) has called for a thorough investigation by the police to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Victims of the stampede were rushed to the Sokoto Specialist Hospital for treatment, according to sources at the medical facility.

The tragedy has cast a shadow over the Eid celebrations in the region, prompting calls for improved crowd control measures during public gatherings.
