EFCC Arrests 14 Suspected Oil Thieves In Port Harcourt, Commences Investigation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Port Harcourt Zonal Command, has apprehended fourteen suspects allegedly involved in oil theft, alongside a Motor Fishing Trawler named Hawwau Tanko, as part of an ongoing investigation.

The suspects were initially detained by the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base (FOB) Formoso, Brass, Bayelsa State, before being handed over to the EFCC for further investigation.

The arrests were made by the detachment of 5 BN Nigerian Army on February 27, 2024, near Fish Town Rivers, Southern Ijaw Bayelsa State, aboard the Motor Fishing Trawler, Hawwau Tanko, which was carrying an estimated 10,000 liters of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).

Navy Captain Murtala Aminu Rogo, the Commanding officer of Forward Operating Base (FOB) Formoso, disclosed that the vessel Hawwau Tanko was apprehended in the Fish Town Rivers of Southern Ijaw, Bayelsa State, on suspicion of illegal bunkering.

In a statement delivered by Navy Commander M. A Gada, Captain Rogo reiterated the Nigerian Navy's commitment to upholding maritime laws and combating illicit activities within the Nigerian maritime domain, including crude oil theft and illegal oil bunkering.

The arrested suspects include: Kolapo Gafar, Monday Aresonor, Rasheed Rafiu, Kubi E. Wowo, Emmanuel Odey, Kolapo Abdullahi, Sunday Obasan, Kolapo Wasiu, Ilojiole Emeka, Owoseni Ehuwa, John Olowokere, Chima Edwin, John Akpan, and Ijoade Tayo.

Navy Captain Rogo condemned the alleged activities of the suspects and the Motor Fishing Trawler Hawwau Tanko as acts of economic sabotage.

Assistant Commander of the EFCC, ACE 1, Ahmed Muhammed Ghali, assured the Navy and the public of further investigation and potential prosecution of the suspects and seized exhibits.

Assistant Superintendent of the EFCC, ASE 1 Salim Abubakar Sadiq, who received the suspects and the vessel on behalf of the EFCC, commended the Navy for their collaboration and reiterated the EFCC's commitment to combating illegal oil bunkering and ensuring perpetrators face the full weight of the law.
