Two individuals were tragically killed and thirteen others injured in a road accident involving a passenger bus and a stationary truck on the Ijebu-Ode-Ore-Benin expressway, near Ajede past the J3 Junction. The incident occurred at approximately 1:21 pm on Saturday.
According to Florence Okpe, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, the collision involved a Toyota Hiace bus operated by Iyare Motors bearing the registration number GUE59ZY, which crashed into a stationary truck with the license plate BGT94LG.
The preliminary investigation suggests that the bus driver's excessive speed caused him to lose control, leading to the fatal impact with the truck that was parked on the roadside.
"The tragic event happened around 12:10 pm on the Sagamu – Ijebu-Ode section of the expressway. It resulted in two fatalities and injuries to 13 of the 15 people onboard the bus," Okpe's statement detailed. Both victims were adult males.
Emergency responders transported the injured passengers to Hope Hospital in J4 for medical treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were moved to the morgue at General Hospital in Ijebu Ode.
In light of the incident, Anthony Uga, the Sector Commander of the FRSC in Ogun, issued a safety advisory to motorists regarding the proper procedures for vehicle breakdowns. Uga emphasized the importance of using caution signs to alert other road users and strongly advised against speeding to enhance road safety.
