On Friday night, a tragic hit-and-run incident occurred along the Awka-Onitsha Expressway, resulting in the death of a female pedestrian. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra State confirmed the fatal accident.
Mr. Adeoye Irelewuyi, Commander of the FRSC in Anambra, provided details of the incident on Saturday in Awka. According to Irelewuyi, the driver, who was operating a Toyota Hiace commercial bus without a registration number, fled the scene after the collision.
"An eyewitness reported that the driver, who was speeding, struck a female adult pedestrian and immediately fled the scene," Irelewuyi stated.
The accident, which occurred near Upper Iweke, Onitsha, was attributed to excessive speed. The FRSC rescue team promptly arrived at the scene and transported the victim to Toronto Mortuary, where she was pronounced dead by a medical professional.
Commander Irelewuyi took the opportunity to warn motorists about the dangers of speeding, particularly during the rainy season, urging them to adhere strictly to prescribed speed limits to prevent further tragedies.
The FRSC continues to investigate the incident while urging the public to provide any information that may lead to the identification and apprehension of the hit-and-run driver.
