The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has made a decisive ruling regarding the disrupted oriental derby between Rangers FC of Enugu and Enyimba Football Club of Aba. The incident in question occurred when Enyimba players walked off the pitch following a controversial penalty awarded to Rangers during added time at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu.
In response, the NPFL has awarded Rangers three points and three goals for the abandoned match. Enyimba has been penalized with a fine of N10 million due to their players' misconduct, which disrupted the NPFL's live broadcast and led to the match's discontinuation.
Additionally, three Enyimba players—Eze Ekwutoziam, Chibuike Nwaiwu, and Akanni Elijah—are currently under investigation for potential further sanctions.
Rangers FC has also faced repercussions. They have been fined a total of N5 million for issues related to "over-ticketing," which caused overcrowding, and for failing to ensure adequate security and crowd control during the match.
The letter read;
“An order forfeiting 3 points and three goals in favour of your opponent refusing to allow the penalty awarded in favour of your opponents to be taken, thereby disrupting the match and bringing the game to disrepute.
“An order for Enyimba to identify and produce for further investigation and appropriate sanctions, other players and officials complicit in the disruptive conducts (particularly against the match officials) that led to a discontinuation of the game, in addition to the following identified players; Eze Ekwutoziam (Jersey No.6), Chibuike Nwaiwu (Jersey No.27), and Akanni Elijah (Jersey No.10).”
