Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has raised serious concerns regarding the ongoing issue of banditry in the region.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s "Sunrise Daily" on June 11, 2024, he disclosed that some political adversaries are clandestinely negotiating with bandits without his authorization, which undermines the state's efforts to address the crisis.
Lawal criticized previous administrations' negotiations with bandits, noting that these talks have been ineffective and have only served to enrich the criminals.
Lawal also expressed frustration with the lack of proactive measures from federal security agencies, such as the police and the military, in combating banditry.
This perceived indifference has prompted the state to establish its own security outfit, the Community Protection Guards, in January.
The governor emphasized that despite the governors' lack of control over federal security forces, the state remains committed to protecting its citizens.
