Emergency responders sprang into action on Tuesday evening following an incident at Coinoil Petrol Station on Capitol Road, Agege area of Lagos State, where a petrol attendant fell into an underground petrol reservoir.
The dramatic rescue operation unfolded around 6 p.m. when the attendant, while checking the fuel level in the underground tank, accidentally slipped and fell in. Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing scene as the attendant struggled to stay afloat.
Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) swiftly deployed its response team to the scene. Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, provided insights into the rescue effort, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
"Our response team found that one of the workers at the filling station had fallen into the underground petrol tank while trying to check the fuel level. Our team immediately initiated a rescue operation to save the individual," Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
The initial rescue mission proved successful, with the petrol attendant safely extracted from the reservoir. However, the situation took a perilous turn when a Lagos State Fire Service Search and Rescue Officer also slipped and fell into the tank during the operation.
Despite the added complication, emergency responders worked diligently to rescue their colleague, demonstrating exceptional teamwork and professionalism. Both individuals were safely retrieved from the underground tank without any fatalities.
Following the rescue, medical personnel from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) provided immediate medical attention to the victims. They stabilized the petrol attendant and the rescue officer before transporting them to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for further evaluation and treatment.
The seamless coordination and swift response of the Lagos State Fire Service and LASEMA received commendations for their professionalism and efficiency in managing the hazardous situation. The successful rescue operations underscored the dedication and preparedness of Lagos State's emergency responders in ensuring public safety.
