A devastating road accident along the Olooru-New Jebba Road in Kwara State has resulted in the loss of 19 lives, including 5 children and 14 adults, following a collision between a commercial bus and a truck.
The fatal crash, attributed to excessive speed and improper overtaking, was confirmed by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), marking a grim toll on innocent lives.
According to Olusegun Ogungbemide, spokesperson for the FRSC, the incident occurred at Kanbi village and involved a blue Iveco trailer and a white Toyota Hiace bus with registration number LSD363YE.
"Preliminary investigation revealed that the crash, which occurred due to excessive speed and wrongful overtaking, resulted in the collision between the two vehicles," Ogungbemide stated in a press release.
Of the 25 individuals involved, 19 tragically lost their lives while 5 sustained injuries and were promptly taken to Orisun Ayo Hospital for medical attention. One victim's body was deposited at the hospital's morgue, while families claimed the remaining 18 bodies.
The Corps Marshal expressed regret over the incident despite ongoing efforts to curb such accidents, including setting up an Inter-agency Joint Task Force and intensifying enlightenment campaigns and stakeholder engagements.
"In line with the 2024 agenda to drastically reduce road carnage, the Corps Marshal has instructed Commanding Officers to intensify special patrol operations to address these identified violations," Ogungbemide added.
