In a tragic and brazen assault, heavily armed gunmen suspected to be terrorists launched a deadly attack on Tudun Doki village in Gwadabawa Local Government Area of Sokoto State, resulting in six fatalities and the abduction of numerous individuals during the early hours of Sallah day.

According to reports, the gunmen stormed the village around 1:30 am, unleashing terror and targeting unsuspecting residents. Ahmed Rufa’i, the Public Relations Officer of the Sokoto State Police Command, confirmed the devastating attack. While six bodies have been recovered thus far, authorities are working to determine the exact number of people abducted by the assailants.

Sokoto State, like several others in the northwestern and central regions of Nigeria, has been plagued by escalating violence orchestrated by heavily armed gangs. These groups perpetrate mass abductions for ransom, along with destructive acts such as arson and looting of homes.

The gangs operate from expansive forests spanning Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, and Niger states, using these remote locations as bases for their criminal activities. Over recent years, they have infamously targeted schools, carrying out large-scale kidnappings of students to extort hefty sums from desperate families and communities.

The surge in attacks by bandits has been particularly pronounced in neighboring states like Katsina and Zamfara. Last month, in an apparent retaliation against military operations, these groups raided villages in Katsina's Sabuwa district, resulting in the deaths of 25 people, primarily local vigilantes.

Although motivated primarily by financial gain rather than ideological agendas, the growing concern among analysts and officials is the potential alliance between these bandits and jihadist groups active in the northeast. This alliance poses a significant threat, exacerbating security challenges and complicating efforts to restore peace and stability in the affected regions.

Authorities in Sokoto State have launched efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and secure the safe return of those abducted. Meanwhile, the community remains in mourning and on edge, grappling with the aftermath of yet another senseless and brutal attack.
