Nigerian activist and prominent member of the Labour Party's 2023 presidential campaign team, Aisha Yesufu, has provided clarity regarding the origins of the "Obidient Movement," refuting claims that it was initiated by Peter Obi, the party's flagbearer in the previous general election.
Yesufu emphasized that the movement stemmed from the widespread discontent following the EndSARS protests and subsequent killings by the government, which galvanized Nigerian youths into political action.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, Yesufu stated, "Nobody created Obidient movement. After the #EndSARS killings by the APC government, many youths became politically engaged out of frustration, having been urged to vote for those responsible for the crackdown. There was a collective anger aimed at voting out the APC, and Peter Obi benefited from this sentiment."
She further explained, "When Peter Obi announced his presidential aspirations, he garnered support from those aggrieved youths. The name 'Obidient' emerged organically as a term to describe his supporters, following the tradition of naming political followers after their preferred candidate in Nigeria. The movement already existed before the name 'OBIdient' was coined."
Yesufu's clarification comes amidst speculations and misconceptions surrounding the genesis of the Obidient Movement, underscoring the grassroots nature of its formation and its alignment with broader societal frustrations and aspirations for political change.
